Freedom Benefits affordable health insurance

Which Secure short term medical insurance is right for me?

"Secure STM", "Secure Lite" or "Secure Saver"

by Tony Novak, CPA, MBA, MT,    updated February 6, 2012

The three types of Secure STM plans offered through IHC Health Solutions Inc. are collectively one of the nation's most popular brands of affordable temporary health insurance. The three plans offer flexibility and choice for the widest possible range of individual needs. These IHC short-term medical (STM) plans give individuals and families peace of mind knowing they will have the coverage they need in case of any catastrophic events; while maintaining flexible coverage options and deductible choices. Our fast secure online enrollment system makes coverage available as soon as tomorrow.

All three Secure STM plans share the following features in common:

  • coverage is provided with any doctor or hospital in the U.S.
  • have a deductible ranging from $250 to $5,000.
  • available up to age 65
  • child only coverage is available
  • payment accepted by check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, Discover or automatic monthly bank draft
  • renewable month-to-month up to the maximum policy length
  • unlimited re-applies in most states (unless limited by state law)
  • issued by Standard Security Life Insurance Company of New York

The most important distinction is that Secure STM and Secure Saver STM are major medical type insurance policies. Secure Lite is a limited benefit policy (also known as a "mini-med") with a stated maximum benefit.

The chart below highlights the key differences between the four options and provides a link to a more detailed summary of coverage.

  • the "standard" short term medical insurance
  • policy length from 1 month to 12 months
  • $2 million maximum coverage

  • lowest premium cost
  • $50 co-pay for physician office visit

  • more stringent medical eligibility requirements (includes a weight limit and "previous decline" question on the application)

This "12x3" policy that could be extended for up to 36 months is no longer available. Maximum coverage under one short term medical insurance policy is now 12 months although it is possible to cover longer periods of time by enrolling with a different insurance company.
