Up to five million Americans who bought their own health insurance received letters that their plans would not be renewed in 2014. The replacement Obamacare policies are typically more expensive and have higher deductibles and out-of-pocket costs than their older traditional insurance plans. On December 19, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency charged with implementation of this part of Obamacare, announced that anyone who had their individual insurance cancelled could apply for a hardship exemption and use less expensive coverage for 2014.
To exercise this option, follow these three steps:
1. Download and complete a "Hardship Exemption Form" from Healthcare.gov. If you need help filling out the exemption form call the Health Insurance Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596
2. Mail the form to Health Insurance Marketplace – Exemption Processing, 465 Industrial Blvd., London, KY 40741 in order to be exempt from the tax penalty. Be sure to keep a copy for your records
3. You might be able to find a better-suited coverage online at FreedomBenefits.net from among the wide range of qualifying and non-qualifying insurance options. If the new qualifying plans from the Members Insurance exchange are too expensive or have higher out-of-pocket costs, consider the popular short term or temporary medical insurance plans or a mini-med policy. If you need help finding the best alternate insurance option, call a Members Insurance Exchange representative at (800) 609-0683.
