With the 2016 open enrollment season now coming to an end, this page is updated to emphasize the plans that will be most widely available until the next open enrollment season.
The most popular individual major medical insurance plans on the state individual state exchanges were mostly the same as in private exchange enrollment. Short term medical insurance is the most popular type of insurance for covering periods between regular coverage.
The most popular low cost supplemental insurance plans for the past several years at Freedom Benefits are the "Core Health" insured by United States Fire Insurance Company offered through www.Corehealthinsurance.net. The Core Health Insurance product is offered at four different levels of benefits so that is can be used as an inexpensive supplement or as an alternative to full coverage when major medical insurance is not available.
Core Dental Insurance by Ameritas remains the only policy of its type available to individuals that does not require a waiting period for major treatment benefits for pre-existing conditions. This plan does require a 12 month purchase commitment, so you cannot sign up, immediately have a root canal paid by the insurance and then drop the insurance.
Inbound Immigrant Insurance from Seven Corners has been the most popular policy for those who need U.S.-based health insurance for a visa. Long time U.S. residents often comment that this specialized coverage is a better value than they can find for themselves in the regular health insurance market.
For shorter international trips, both into and out of the U.S., Liaison International Travel Medical Insurance has been the most popular. Trip insurance, which includes foreign country medical coverage as well as other coverage, is usually inexpensive - often less than the cost of a good meal - so more travelers are drawn to this coverage.
The fastest rising in popularity is Smart Accident Insurance that is typically used to supplement employer-provided or individual high deductible health insurance plan.
Telemedicine plans also gained popularity over the past year but it is important to point out that these are not insurance.
Some plans are not available in all states; check the state-specific pages for more information.
