Accident insurance adds protection for a wide range of sudden unexpected medical costs. This insurance is available to individual purchasers or as part of an employee benefit plan. Policies are easy to understand, are inexpensive and available to all. The drawback, of course, is that these policies do not cover the cost of treating illnesses or disease.
Accident insurance is "guaranteed issue," meaning there aren't any health questions at the time of enrollment, so this contributes to the growing popularity of this type of coverage. Industry sources report that accident coverage has grown 14% to 20% in each of the past four years.
Accidents tend to increase during the summer months. One insurance company spokesman was quoted in Insurance Weekly News saying "Some of the most common accident claim payments we see include emergency room services, follow up treatments, doctor visits, fractures, hospital services and physical therapy," Cecil said. "These medical events can really drain a family's bank account. If a family has accident insurance, however, they are given a lump sum payment that can be used as needed to help soften the financial impact of these types of incidents." Cecil also notes the affordability of this type of insurance. "One claim can often repay the annual premium."
Health reform laws generally do not apply to accident insurance so these policies remain available through commercial online sources without the help of an agent or navigator. Coverage can stop or start at any time so these plan can be used for either short term or long term periods of coverage. There are no medical requirements so everyone under age 65 qualifies. Some plans may exclude active members of the military.
The most popular individual accident insurance plan here at Freedom Benefits is Smart Accident Insurance that provides $25,000 to $250,000 supplemental coverage from Markel Insurance Company. The most recent accident insurance introduced on the exchange is Zurich American offered through Consumers Direct.
Group accident plans can be an affordable supplemental voluntary employee benefit. A new product from Unum offers multiple benefit level choices - including the ability to tailor benefit amounts or eliminate specific benefits. This can help an employer meet their health plan objectives and their employees' needs. Ask for an employee benefit agent referral for more information.
