Guaranteed issue insurance refers to coverage that is available regardless of your medical history or diagnosis. However, it is important to consider that while a guaranteed issue insurance may be available, some plans restrict payments for pre-existing medical conditions for the first year of the policy. especially if you did not maintain comparable coverage previously.
This type of coverage can be very expensive if not subsidized by a government or employer organization. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that the total cost of insurance for those on the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plans will be about $33,000 per person in 2012. Most of this cost will be paid by the federal government and the cost of insurance to the individual is only about $4,000.
Popular limited benefit plans like Core Health Insurance are guaranteed issue plans that are available at lower cost than major medical insurance. These plans keep the premium costs affordable by eliminating the hospitalization and surgery benefits available for pre-existing medical conditions for the first twelve months of the policy.
Employer-sponsored group health insurance is also available on a guaranteed-issue basis and also excludes early benefits for pre-existing conditions unless the new enrollee shows proof of continuous prior coverage.
Some smaller supplemental accident coverage plans are also available on a guaranteed issue basis like Smart Accident Insurance and Value Benefits 24 Hour Accident plan. Recently added Zurich American Consumer Direct Accident Insurance provides up to $10,000 coverage and is available to everyone in every state for $55 per month.
