High deductible insurance is used to separate ordinary medical expenses from catastrophic medical risks. It is economically more efficient for an individual to pay their own routine medical costs than to pay an insurance company to process the claim. This is why the savings for taking a higher deductible policy are sometimes even greater than the maximum possible additional risk. Then when we consider that 4 out of 5 healthy people do not meet their insurance deductible on any given year, it makes even more sense to consider this strategy.
Insurance policies are available with deductibles up to $12,000. In other words, for example, a policy with a $10,000 deductible may be priced only $3 higher than a policy with a $50,000 deductible. As a result, no reasonable person would choose the large extra risk for such a small savings in premium.
All of the deductible choices and related premium costs are available through a medical insurance screening that may be requested at no charge from your health insurance navigator.
Various laws and regulatory proposals threaten the use of high deductible insurance as a financial management strategy. Beginning January 2014 most individual insurance plans will be forced to lower their deductibles to the amounts prescribed by federal health reform law. Various states are considering adding legislation that would prevent most employers from using "stop-loss coverage" to bypass the federal health insurance mandates.
